2009 – Drama – Fantasy – Rated R – 2h 23m – Trailer
In the mood for: Something that will blow my mind and make me rethink existence itself.
This stunning visual masterpiece is something you don’t want to miss. Fair warning, though, this film isn’t for the light-hearted. It’s basically one of the most trippy dramas you will ever see in your life.
Also, if you’re epileptic, please choose something else from our list. This movie has a lot of scenes that have strobe effects. And because of the constant movement from the camera, some people have also gotten dizzy watching this film, just pause it for a bit and take a break. You might need it.
Enter the Void tells the story of Nathaniel Brown, a drug dealer who is killed in a drug exchange. He then leaves his body and starts to transition into the after-life.
The camera follows him through the stunning Tokio lights as he sees his loved ones go through all of the ups and downs that come with his passing. Making you feel like an actual ghost when you see everything through his floating soul.
The neon lights and superb soundtrack serve as a back-drop to a story that demonstrates just how messy dealing with drugs can get. And it is one of the most mind-bending, heart-wrenching, ground-breaking movies out there. This film will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
Trust us when we tell you that you aren’t likely to forget Enter the Void if you decide to watch it. If you don’t want to question all of existence, choose another film from our list. This one gets real deep, real quick.

It is one of its kind and a complete visual treat to watch from beginning to finish. It is also one of the most creative sci-fi movies to ever grace the silver screen. We can truly say that there is nothing like it, nor will there be. So, if trippy visuals are your thing, you need to watch this movie asap!
The Congress was inspired by The Futurological Congress by Stanislaw Lem, a futurism Russian writer who believed mankind would eventually live in a simulated reality. He was kind of right, but the Metaverse doesn’t hold a candle to what The Congress proposes.
This movie takes place in the future where CGI technology takes over the cinematic industry and puts actors out of work. It also allows for humans to live artificially in a world that is 100% cartoon.
The main character is Robin Wright, who plays herself in the film. You may know her as one of cinema’s most beautiful villains in her role as Jenny in Forrest Gump. In this movie, she signs the last contract she will ever sign as an actress and sells her “essence” to a huge production company.
This CGI technology allows her to live in a completely animated world, where she embarks on a journey to save her son, who is suffering from a rare illness. There, she encounters all types of animated and surreal nonsense, in a dystopian but really colorful world.
The Congress isn’t only a really profound story that will leave you wanting to call your mom, but also a half-live action, half-animated, surreal-as-it-gets masterpiece. If you feel like seeing something that will make you feel like you’re dreaming, this is the movie for you.
1985 – Romance – Comedy – 1h 22m – Rated PG-13 – Trailer
In the mood for: A comedy-filled romance with really weed-friendly humor and surreal undertones.
The Purple Rose of Cairo isn’t only one of Woody Allen’s most underrated films, it was also the first to break the fourth wall. What’s the fourth wall? The movie screen itself.
This “high” inducing film is about a movie character who sees a girl in the audience and falls madly in love with her. So he decides to hop off the screen of his movie and into the arms of the girl in the audience. And they run off together to explore the streets of New York.
The other people in the audience nearly have a heart attack when they see him leap off the movie screen, and the word quickly gets around. Soon, the entire town is in the movie theater watching the other characters from the film improvise the story without the main character.
This bizarre romance will have you wishing that something like that would happen when going to see a Scarlet Johanson or Chris Hemsworth film. And trust when we say your stomach will hurt from laughter.
The Purple Rose of Cairo keeps you laughing from start to finish with Woody Allen’s intellectual and flawless one-line stingers. So if you’re in the mood for a good giggle or want to see history in the making, this film is for you.
1986 – Fantasy – Musical – 1h 41m – Rated PG – Trailer
In the mood for: A mind-bending 80’s musical that will keep both me and my kids or siblings entertained.
What do you get when you combine Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, George Lucas, the Star Wars director, and David Bowie, one of the single greatest musicians to ever live? You get Labyrinth.
This film is another oldy but goody from our list. It comes as no surprise, though, given the amazing talent that is behind the creation of this movie.
Labyrinth is a practical effects-live action film that stars David Bowie and it’s surreal and mind-bending to say the least. Almost all of the dialogues sound like philosophical riddles.
And the whimsical ambience of this film is just divine, so it’s also really amazing to look at. It’s just as amazing to listen to, given that Bowie himself composed the songs for this movie.
The Labyrinth is the story of a girl who finds herself stuck in a labyrinth of riddles and dead ends while trying to save her brother from the Goblin King, a.k.a. David Bowie. She will find some really bizarre creatures along the way and get herself in more than one pickle.
If you were a Muppet fan, love or have seen The Dark Crystal, enjoy a riddle-ridden adventure, or are a fan of David Bowie and the 80’s in general, this movie is for you. Trust us when we say you’ll be singing for days.
1939 – Fantasy – Musical – 1h 52m – Rated G – Trailer
In the mood for: A truly stunning and timeless musical that will keep you and your kids or siblings entertained, and leave everyone feeling more united afterwards.
You’re probably thinking that we really must like musicals, but we couldn’t leave out The Wizard of Oz! And though it belongs to one of the least liked genres, it has been included in countless top 100 movies of all time lists for a reason!
Not only has it been included, it’s actually normally pretty high up on the list. This film is actually so impressive that UNESCO included it in the Memory of the World Register back in 2007.
It is truly astonishing to look at even to this day and most people have a really hard time believing that this masterpiece was made in 1939! Most CGI-filled movies that came out this year, don’t hold a candle to what this film achieved.
This film tells the story of Dorothy, who gets carried away by a tornado to the mystical world of Oz. There she will encounter witches, a talking scarecrow, a scared lion, a heartless tinman, and countless other whimsical creatures on her journey to find her way home.
The Wizard of Oz isn’t only a groundbreaking film, it also has one of the most powerful messages to ever be portrayed on the silver screen. And if you accompany this film with a nice pre-roll, we guarantee your eyes will water from the visual ecstasy that you’ll experience.
2014 – Drama – Comedy – 1h 40m – Rated R – Trailer
In the mood for: A laugh-inducing movie that is also visually stunning and action packed.
The Grand Budapest Hotel is a comedic gem! Wes Anderson is famous for his monochromatic color palettes and his dry but witty humor. And this film doesn’t disappoint on either count.
The purple, pink, and red tones that this movie is drenched in, serve a backdrop to a thrilling mystery adventure. This film follows Gustave, a hotel manager, and his lobby boy in there attempt to run away from the police after being acussed of murdering an 84 year old hotel guest who Gustave was having an affair with.
This movie gets more and more surreal with every passing minute and will have you gasping for air with laughter. If you’re a fan of anything Wes Anderson and still haven’t checked this film out, then we highly recommend you do so!
2017 – Horror – Psychological Thriller – Suspense – 1h 44m – Rated R – Trailer
In the mood for: Something that will have you on the edge of my seat from start to finish while bending my mind in all directions.
Get Out is hands down one of the best thrillers of our time. We would actually go as far as to say one of the best of all time. Hitchcock would definitely be proud of the way Peele handles the suspense from beginning to end.
This film tells the story of Chris, an African American photographer who is going down to meet his white girlfriend’s parents for the weekend in a predominantly white neighborhood. There he notices that the few black people that are there, are acting—not quite themselves.
Things go side-ways pretty quickly and he finds himself escaping from a real-life horror story while uncovering one of the most bizarre and terrifying operations that you can imagine. This psychological thriller will leave you feeling like someone has gotten into your head as well.
It isn’t only an absolute thrill to see. Get out, shines a light on countless problems that African Americans face on a day-to-day basis and demonstrates the truly horrid ways in which black people are treated in our country.
Even though Get Out is a fantasy psychological thriller, there is nothing fictitious about it. It will make you think, bend your mind, and transform you, even more so if your senses are heightened with a good dose of weed.
2016 – Suspense – Terror – 1h 58m – Rated R – Trailer
In the mood for: A jaw-dropping, action-packed, visually stunning, and suspense-filled horror film that has a killer soundtrack.
The Neon Demon is on our list for a lot of reasons: its electronic music soundtrack is an absolute gem, the photography is truly groundbreaking, the message is as powerful as they come, and it is one of the most terrifying suspense films of our time!
The Neon Demon is the story of a young model who, upon arriving in L.A., quickly begins to make a name for herself as a model. The only problem is that the more attention she gets, the more of a target she becomes for those who are competing for the same jobs as her.
Strange things start to happen to her and things escalate by the minute, ending in one of the most gut-wrenching scenes in cinematic history. Make sure you don’t go overboard with the munchies for this film; this scene might make you hurl.
If you have epilepsy, I would also stay away from this choice. It has a 5-minute strobe-effect scene that could induce a seizure.
And even though it is more on the gruesome side, it is always visually stunning and catered to a tee. This film made us forget that time existed because we were so wrapped up in it, and we hope it does the same for you!
2017 – Crime – Drama – Art – 1h 34m – Rated PG13 – Trailer
In the mood for: An art-filled film that can only be described as visual ecstasy, and one of the most pure love letters to one of the greatest artists to ever live: Vincent Van Gogh.
Loving Vincent is, in our opinion, one of the most visually stunning films of all time. This movie is truly the first of its kind!
This movie was shot in live-action, but each shot was captured by imitation artists from around the world in an oil-painting in Vincent’s impressionist technique. Thus creating the illusion that it isn’t a movie, but a painting that’s moving.
This technique took years to finish. Making it one of the most ambitious film projects in the history of cinema.
Loving Vincent is a film about the life and death of Vincent Van Gogh, and the letters he once exchanged with his brother Theo Van Gogh. It’s narrated in the form of gossip which is also a really interesting aspect because you’re never quite sure which version of the truth to believe.
If you pause this movie at any point, you will find yourself in front of an oil painting masterpiece, which makes it a truly unique experience. For all the art fans out there, if you haven’t seen Loving Vincent, you’re missing out.
So get your popcorn ready and be prepared to be amazed at what cinema is achieving today. Fair warning, though; this movie will have you reaching for the tissues by the end.
1973 – Science Fiction – Fantasy – Drama – Adult Animation – Rated PG13 – Trailer
In the mood for: A mind-bending, adult animation, imaginative visual joy that will leave you thinking for days.
Lastly, we have the amazing and formidable Savage Planet by French director René Laloux. This movie is, simply put, a surreal portrait of the imagination run rampid.
It isn’t only one of the most “high” inducing movies out there; its message about humanity and the way we function as a society and treat other living things is truly something that will touch the deepest part of your soul.
This movie is about an extra-terrestrial species that enslaves humans as pets and slaves on a planet that can only be described as a very intense acid trip. And although it can be easy to get absorbed by the astonishing hand-drawn imagery, the dialogues are simple yet extremely profound.
So if you’re the kind of stoner that likes movies that are visually stunning and substantial, you need to see this movie yesterday. It is simply a cathartic, life-changing experience.
